Wrapsody: Pilinut-filled pastry

Why it delights me: I found this when I was shopping for pasalubong (presents) on my way home from Bicol. It was a last-minute impulse buy. I suppose I was drawn in by its name..."Wrapsody"...and its allusion to
being in rhapsody....enraptured...ecstatic...yeah give me some of that... I admit I am highly suggestible. Pili nuts are a specialty in the Bicol region of the Philippines. According to Wikipedia, pili nuts, when raw, "resembles the flavor of roasted pumpkin seed, and when roasted, its mild, nutty flavor and tender-crispy texture is superior to that of the almond." A few other sources I have come across also comment on the delicate taste of pili nuts, often saying that it is either superior or comparable to almonds, which oddly made me appreciate this even more.

This delight is manufactured in the province of Daraga, Albay. As you unwrap its pretty silver wrapping, the scent of what seems like freshly baked vanilla bread pudding engulfs your senses, as my friend, Fai, put it. This delectably crunchy and chewy pastry is made with layers of phyllo dough, sweet caramel syrup, butter, sugar, and chopped pili nuts. Its taste has also been compared to Mediterranean baklava, which is what I thought as well when I first bit into it. Even better -for me- now that we have a delicious local Philippine version. My squishy friend, AJ, enjoys how the "pastry flakes break down as you bite on it and how the caramelized sugar both melt and crunch when you sink your teeth into its awesomeness, and finally how the nutty flavor lingers in your mouth and leaves you wanting for more." An apt description, if I may say so. Definitely a delectable must-try if you are in the Bicol region, if you happen by it, and if you have a sweet-tooth.
