Pacific Foods Hemp Milk

Why it delights me:  The word “hemp” was enough to put a smile on my face. I'll be honest, and say that I haven't had the opportunity to try other hemp brands, so I can't say that this is the best I've tried, nevertheless it was an interesting discovery and a good introduction to hemp milk.

So...what is hemp milk anyway?

According to Dr. Andrew Weil, a doctor of dubious repute (we all like controversy)... hemp milk is made from the seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant...and we all know what plant that is! To make the milk, the seeds are pulverized, blended with water, then strained. Its appeal to health buffs is that it is high in Omega-3 and Omega-6. However, Dr. Weil notes that the Omega-3 in hemp is not as desirable as the Omega-3 found in fish oil. Yes, apparently there are different kinds of Omega-3. I learned something today. However, while it is made from the same plant where marijuana is made, this product -unfortunately- does not leave you with the narcotic-like effects.

Several other nutrients also found in hemp milk include "magnesium, phytosterols, ascorbic acid, beta-carotine, calcium, fiber, iron, potassium, phosphorus, riboflavin, niacin and thiamin."   Finally, he also notes that the protein in hemp is more digestible than soy because "unlike soy, it contains no oligosaccharides, complex sugars that can cause flatulence if not properly broken down during digestion." Well... that explains a lot...

That was my lame attempt at a joke.

I apologize.

For anyone looking for a milk-substitute, this nutty and creamy health drink is a good alternative. Although, taste-wise it is not my personal favorite, as it has (as my friend Fai puts it) an indescribably unique flavor.

Interpret that as you like.

I suppose it's a matter of personal preference, but that should not deter you from trying it out yourself. This U.S.-made product seems to pack a punch in the health department and is definitely worth a try.

How I use it: I have used it with cereal and by itself. I'll admit, I haven't been too creative... however, I'm sure it would be interesting to experiment with it and use it in baking.

Health claims: The product makes no particular health claims other than being a "balanced source of Omega-3 and Omega-6 with GLA, 50% RDA Calcium, 3g Protein, Minerals magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, and iron, lactose free, cholesterol free, and gluten free." Click here to read more about the health benefits of hemp milk.

Other product notes/usages: Their website mentions that this product is: Gluten Free,  Kosher Parve,  Dairy Free, Low Sodium, and for Vegan Diet.

Allergen Note: According to Dr. Weill, "hemp seeds and nuts do not pose the same threat that tree nuts do. Anyone allergic to soy or dairy should be able to safely consume hemp milk." Their website mentions that regulated allergens (milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, or soy) are typically listed on their labels according to The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act and none of these are listed for this product.

Shelf-life: The carton mentions consume within (to be updated)  days after opening

Price in Php: (as of 2012) to be updated

  1. Whole foods .... 4 bucks for a chocolate flavored 32 oz container. Bought this just to try on Sept 3 2012 and it's very good. Expensive for a drink but good. You could be doing worse by dropping the same cash (or more) on those stupid power drinks. At least here you're getting some nutrition in your bod. Never have tried any of those ridiculous power drinks ... never will. What a waste of cash
